My top picks:

1) La Jolla Cove -- Gorgeous area to walk around and have a bite to eat with a view of the ocean. Depending on the time of year, you can see the seals out on the rocks or the beach. I take everyone who visits me in San Diego to this spot.

2) Balboa Park -- Dozens of museums, old architecture, and street performers. Usually has great weather, even if it's overcast by the beach.

3) Cabrillo National Monument -- This spot has an amazing view of downtown and the harbor. A good alternative is to head to the Bali Hai Restaurant on Shelter Island -- great food (try the "chicken of the gods") and a good view of downtown from across the bay.

4) Torrey Pines State Park -- Great hiking with several difficulty level choices. You can hike all the way down to the beach or stay in the upper trails that offer great cliff-top views of the ocean and coast.

Our family really enjoyed SeaWorld and Mission Beach.  Lots of interesting people at Mission Beach.

La Jolla is small and you can cover most areas in your first day.  You should also try getting to Old Town.

A Little detail about La Jolla. you're in a great place! in the middle of SD your can reach almost every place within a decent drive. La Jolla Cove Gifts is a little gift store but aslo so muc more with cave tours and akyak tours which can be signed up for day of. Also Snorkeling at the Cove is a must DO! its a world apart once you get past the stench of the Sea Lions :) Have a Great Trip!

P.S. if your looking for good kid friendly fun Surf Lessons from one of the many shops down there are fun and usually a good deal because the teachers are usually Local Pros!
