Places to visit in Kerala and best ways of getting there?

What are some of the must see places in Kerala and what is the nearest airport to these places? Any recommendations for an itinerary? I'm starting to plan a trip for 5 days in the beginning of August and would love any suggestions.

There are many places but I am listing some of my favorites:

Wayanad- A rain forest region
Munnar- The hill station
Thekkady- A wildlife sanctuary
Alleppey- Backwaters and probably the most visited place in Kerala
Kovalam-  For the beaches

I have listed the places as per their positions, when travelling form North to South Kerala.

For Waynad the nearest airport (Around 100 Kms) is Calicut. For Munnar, Alleppey & Thekkady, nearest airport is Kochi and for Kovalam the nearest airport is Trivandrum.

Hi, Kerala , the God's own country has lot to visit according to theme and interest of travel. Even though the most popular travel destination for a 5 days trip is to land at Kochi airport, Pick up and en route enjoy the water falls and reach Munnar. The 2 nights stay in Munnar is sufficient , than move on to Thekkady for a night stay , enjoy Periyar boating and other cultural themes. Travel to Alleppey / Kumarakom for a night stay, enjoy backwater boating , fishing etc. Back to Kochi for 1 night relax for shopping and sightseeing.

Most preferred Itinerary

Kochi (1) Munnar (2) Thekkady (1) Alleppey/ Kumarakom (1)

Hi Sheena,

I would suggest the following places.

MunnarThekkady and Kerala Backwater Houseboats. If you are visiting Munnar, ideally you should spend 2 nights. If you are not into activities, one night is enough at Thekkady. one night is for Kerala Backwater Houseboats. The nearest airport is Nedumbassery( 33 kms away from Kochi town.

Heyy Sheena!

Kerala has so much to offer to tourists that even a month won't be enough. But yeah, you can visit the best and most popular places in 5 days like Cochin, Allepey, Munnar, Thekkady and Trivandrum.

You may start your journey from Kochi which is very well connected by air from all the major cities of India.A day in Kochi would be enough.

Day 1: Reach And Explore Kochi. Stay in Kochi Only.

Day 2 :Head towards Munnarwhich is a very popular hill station of south india(3-4 hours drive). Explore Munnar and night stay there only.

Day 3:  Take breakfast and get ready for your next destination; Thekkady.A roughy 2 hours of picturesque drive, and there you are at Thekkady. It is famous for Periyar national park where you can spot tigers(if lucky) while on a boat sailing on periyar river.

DO NOT miss the the Jeep safari at thekkady. It is really awesome and you  get to discover a number of places which otherwise wont be possible.

Night stay at Thekkady.

Day 4: Early morning head towards Alleppey which is famous for its backwaters.Hire a house boat there till next morning. It will be one of the best experiences of your life; i can guarantee that. Night stay in the house boat itself.

Day 5
: Deboard the House boat in the morning. You can visit the alleppey beach. After that you have two choices: either head back towards Kochi and take a flight back home. Or you can go to @.I would suggest you to go to trivandrum as there you can find one of the best beaches of Kerala. Kovalam, Golden sand beach are few of them.

There is a boat ride near trivandrum where it takes you through mangrove forests till the golden sand beach. A sunset there should not be missed.

After that you can visit the infamous Padmanabhaswamy temple of trivandrum where gold and jewellery worth billions was found a few years ago.

Take your late night flight back home from trivandrum airport which is also very well connected to all major airports of India.

PS: I followed this itenerary on my trip to Kerala last year.:D

Hope you find it useful.
