Help to get estimations and tips for an optional trip route

Hi everyone,

So we have about a month, and can do less or more, we thought about Kenya & Tanzania combined trip to see as much wildlife, nature, and culture :)

At this point, we have an idea of where we want to go and an approximate route, but obviously, the route itself might be far from optimal since we're not aware of where are the actual main roads, current highways, the side in which you visit each national reserve, how much time do we need for each "location".

The general idea is as follows:
- Land in Nairobi
- Amboseli National Reserve
- Masai Mara National Reserve
- Serengeti National Park
- Ngorongoro Crater
- Arusha National Park
- Fly from Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar and spend a week there (unless this is too much).

In addition to the points above, we would like to do as much as possible, see villages such as a Masai village in Kenya, visit hot springs (Kikuletwa Springs), go for hikes (not extreme such as climbing the Kilimanjaro), see waterfalls, experience great food and so on.

This is obviously a very vague idea, if anybody can shed light it would be amazing!

Hello Nimrod,
That's a great safari itinerary you have which if you allow me I would recommend below itinerary. You haven't indicated how many which is the determining fact on the cost. However for the 12 days safari like as per suggested below itinerary is:
- 2 persons traveling each is $5650
- 3 persons traveling each is $5084
- 4 person traveling each is $4737
- 5 persons traveling each is $4529
- 6 persons traveling each is $4390
Itinerary:
This 12 day Kenya Tanzania safari tour of two of East Africa’s most wildlife abundant countries is a must for travelers wishing to take life by the scruff of the neck. Marrying the best-loved locations of both countries provides a unique and exciting experience that can be tailored to suit your interests and budget. From safari lodges and tented camps to luxury boutique accommodation, this is your tour and we want you to feel comfortable and engaged every step of the way.
If you got designs on observing the great migration, when millions of wildebeest cross the Mara River and attempt to evade top predators, then any time between June and October is going to draw dramatic displays. Game drives in the Masai Mara, close to the Serengeti in Tanzania, are simply unforgettable.
  • Day 1 Nairobi – Masai Mara. Early morning breakfast, 0730AM. Meet your safari driver guide at the reception ready for the safari. Depart for the drive to Masai Mara National Reserve arriving in time for lunch at your camp/lodge. Short siesta before afternoon game drive in Masai Mara reserve in search of game. Dinner and overnight at Mara Sopa lodge
  • Day 2 Full Day Masai Mara. Spend the day on a game drive with morning and afternoon game drive with breakfast and lunch at your lodge/camp. You have an option of having a very early morning breakfast and depart with a picnic lunch so as to spend the entire day on the game drive having not to come back to the camp for meals. Dinner and overnight at Mara Sopa lodge
  • Day 3 Masai Mara – Lake Naivasha. Early breakfast thereafter drive with a game drive out of the reserve for the drive to Lake Naivasha, arriving in time for lunch at Naivasha. Afternoon drive to hell’s gate national park which is in the heart of the rift valley with hot springs/volcano as well visit the gorge with a nature guide who will give you an in-depth history of the volcanos. Dinner and overnight at Naivasha Sopa lodge
  • Day 4 Lake Naivasha – Lake Nakuru National Park. Early breakfast followed by a drive to Lake Nakuru national park for morning game drives en route to the lodge for lunch. Afternoon game drives in search of the game with dinner and overnight at Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge
  • Day 5 Lake Nakuru – Amboseli National Park. Early morning game drives in search of the game around the lake with thousands of flamingo and also the only park you will have the guarantee of seeing the rhino in large numbers among other wildlife. After breakfast depart for the drive to Amboseli with lunch in Nairobi. You will arrive at Amboseli in time for late afternoon game drives en-route to your lodge. Dinner and overnight at Amboseli Sopa lodge
  • Day 6 Full Day Amboseli. Early morning game drives in search of game and also this will be the best chance to see the famous Mt. Kilimanjaro which is just next to the park. Though Mt. Kilimanjaro is in Tanzania, the best place to see it clearly is in Amboseli more clearly than ever while on the Tanzanian side. You can decide also to have another game drive after breakfast or just relax at the lodge and enjoy the view. You will have an afternoon game drives after lunch. Dinner and overnight at Amboseli Sopa lodge.
  • Day 7 Amboseli – Ngorongoro. Early morning breakfast, depart for the drive out of Amboseli with game drives en route heading to Namanga bonder for the immigration clearance. Continue with 2hrs drive to Arusha town arriving in time for lunch at Mt. Meru hotel. After lunch depart for the drive through the Ngorongoro Highlands to your lodge situated on the rim of the crater. The crater covers over 300 square kilometers of land and is the home of the rare black rhino, prides of lion, elephant, cheetah, and great herds of buffalo, antelope, and wildebeest. Dinner and overnight at Ngorongoro Sopa lodge
  • Day 8 Full Day Ngorongoro. Today you will descend over 600 meters to the floor of the crater for a full day Ngorongoro crater tour. Explore the forest areas that are inhabited by monkey and elephant, the lake area, where you may see the flamingos, and the open savannah where the lions hunt for food. Picnic lunches will be served in the crater. Dinner and overnight at Ngorongoro Sopa lodge
  • Day 9 Ngorongoro – Serengeti National Park. After breakfast drive to Oldupai Gorge, site of Louis and Mary Leakey’s renowned archaeological discoveries. Their findings include some of the man’s earliest known ancestral remains. Continue to Serengeti National Park in time for lunch. This enormous park supports every variety of animal imaginable – from large predators such as lion, leopard, and cheetah to the smaller herbivores they prey on. Afternoon game drive. Dinner and overnight at Serengeti Sopa Lodge
  • Day 10 Full Day Game Drive at Serengeti National Park. Today you spend the whole day on a game drive in this National Park, which is rich with all different species of animals. To maximize game viewing you will carry a picnic lunch with you and spend a full day in the Serengeti National Park. Dinner and overnight at Serengeti Sopa Lodge
  • Day 11 Serengeti – Lake Manyara National Park. Breakfast at your lodge. Drive to Lake Manyara, a soda lake lying in the Great Rift Valley. Lunch at Lake Manyara. In the afternoon game drive in Lake Manyara National Park, home of the tree-climbing lions. Apart from the varied types of landscape including jungle, swamp, and savanna, there is also a large variety of animals including Giraffe, Zebra, Elephant, Gazelle, hippos, monkeys, and about 400 different species of birds. Dinner and overnight at Lake Manyara Serena Lodge
  • Day 12 Lake Manyara – Arusha or Nairobi. Early morning game drives returning back in time for breakfast; After breakfast drive to Arusha with a drop off at Kilimanjaro airport.

Hi Nimrod,
There are 2 borders to use when on safari between Kenya and Tanzania. From Maasai Mara to Serengeti you can use the Isebania border which will be more costly since the company operating has to get the two vehicles to drop you off and pick you up from Isebania. The Tanzania safari vehicle will come from Arusha to Isebania and the Kenya vehicle will come from Maasai Mara to Isebania and then back to Nairobi. This is quite a distance.
The other option is Namanga border, from Amboseli to Namanaga no extra cost, then Namanga to Arusha short distance.
My recommendation is as below
Day 1 Arrive Nairobi
Day 2 Nairobi to Maasai Mara
Day 3 Maasai Mara
Day 4 Maasai Mara to Nairobi or add Lake Naivasha or Lake Nakuru
Day 5 Nairobi to Amboseli
Day 6 Amboseli
Day 7 Amboseli to Arusha National Park
Day 8 Arusha to Serengeti National Park
Day 9 Serengeti National Park
Day 10 Ngorongoro crater then back to Arusha or Tarangire National Park
Day 11 Arusha to Zanzibar
Day 12 to 19 Zanzibar (though this is overkill spend 4 nights, but on the other hand im not a beach person)
With this your budget will not go overboard and you will get all the activities you want. Let me know if you want any futher information.
Kind Regards,
Steve

I do have more questions, we wouldn't want to just do Safari activities, even though this is the main thing, we would probably want to visit villages, hike a bit, see waterfalls, springs, w/e comes to mind, in that case, how many more days can we have in between? do you need to book with a specific agency for the entire itinerary? we have much more than 19 days available and if we already take an extremely long flights we rather spend as much time as possible and do max activities :)
