BEST food in Kauai?

Please recommend the BEST food trucks in Kauai. Also, best restaurant with an ocean view for a special Anniversary dinner. Reviews for food are so up and down. Would also like to know where to buy fresh seafood for grilling at the house.

thanks, Molly.....

Great answers so far. I'll throw North Shore Grindz in there as a food truck type option although it's part of a gas station store. You can get a proper Hawaiian plate lunch there.

For views, The St. Regis Princeville Resort has one of the best views in the world and you could do breakfast/lunch/dinner to take it in. The Beach House is also breathtaking. Go for the sunset. The whole restaurant stops and everyone walks out for pictures.

For good food/drinks: Bar Acuda is the best food/scene in Hanalei Bay.

  1. North Shore Grindz (restaurant)
  2. The St. Regis Princeville Resort (hotel)
  3. The Beach House (restaurant)
  4. Bar Acuda (attraction)

Saw the question posted in my email inbox and immediately thought of Puka Dog Hawaiian Style Hot Dogs.  Not a food truck, but it was a good, fun experience...and I guarantee you will never look at a hot dog (or lemonade) the same ever again.

Best view:  The Beach House on the south shore or The St. Regis Princeville Resort.  However, while no view, I think the best food on the island is Bar Acuda in Hanalei.  Amazing food.

Fresh seafood to grill (on the North Shore):  Hanalei Dolphin Restaurant has a good fish market..

Food Trucks:  while not a food truck, Duane's Ono-Char Burger is a shackish stand on the side of the road with great burgers.

You will love the food in Kauai.  We stayed near Kapaa, and there were plenty of fun options.  BE Food Truck Café has a great menu, items are things you would recognize-but with a slight twist (i.e., chicken and waffles, but the waffles were jalapeno cornbread waffles).  Chicken in a Barrel (more food stand than truck) has excellent BBQ Chicken, fun sides and yummy cornbread.  We also tried Little Greek Town just because I love gyros and these did not disappoint.

While not food trucks, but if you are near Puka Dog Hawaiian Style Hot Dogs, don't miss it.  You will never find anything like it anywhere else.  And we also enjoyed Olympic Cafe for its variety, and brunch (excellent bloody mary bar).  There are a few Bubba Burgers on the island too in case you just need something greasy and yummy!

We did not do the beachside dining, so I won't even try to recommend something for you-but my guess is to look into the dining options at the The St. Regis Princeville Resort. They are bound to have waterfront and romantic all in one.

Lastly, depending on your budget for hotels-the St. Regis on the higher end, Marriott's Waiohai Beach Club or we rented an apartment within the Waipouli Beach Resort through Homeway.  This allowed us to cook up some meals, do some fun take out (our apartment had two balconies, on the water) and enjoy the pool too.  There was a Safeway across the street, so we had plenty of fresh options to cook back in the room, but up near the northshore we read about Kilauea Fish Market....

Hope that's helpful-safe travels!

I'll agree with Jacey about Puka dogs.  You gotta have one, they're fun.  I'll also recommend Hamura Saimin in Lihue.  You may have to wait in the line out the door, but its a genuine local experience.  However, the best three meals we had were the result of buying a fresh caught tuna for I think, $8, out of the back of a truck that was parked by the side of the road north of the airport about where highway 51 runs into 56.  We had to google how to fillet it.  I got the impression he's usually there.  We had more expensive meals, but none that were more enjoyable or memorable.

Bulletproof coffee at Small Town Coffee Co. will get you up Waimea Canyon State Park and down again in record time.

on the way back Koloa Fish Market is a great fresh fish spot. Dont be intimidated by the line up, The grilled ahi and korean poke are worth the wait and the pace is always good. The lunch lineup is usally all locals, which is a good sign, who are more than willing to tell you whats good to eat.

The best restaurant with ocean view is The Beach House in Poipubut pricey. There are two food tours you can take to get to know restaurants. One is for North Side and One for South. Look up Taste of Kauai's website. Hukilau Lanai is best and reasonable on Coconut Coast, always Roy's Poipu Bar & Grill, Da Crack for casual blackened fish tacos (little hole in the wall Poipu side). There's Kintaro Japanese Restaurant for Japanese. They are always consistent and been there for years. The Hanapepe Cafe & Espresso is open for dinner only Friday nights Art nights. Kapaa has food trucks on their street fair First Saturdays . The upscale farmer's market Poipu side in the new shopping center has great sliders, Eastside has fusion in Kapaaand Tapas, not too many food trucks on the island, mostly at the Farmers Market which are almost every day some where, Duke's Kauai at the port although a chain is good also. Have fun, lots if good food there, Hanalei Dolphin Restaurant and more up that way. Depends on what area you are in.
