Japan, Tokyo

Tokyo's a definite - where else is good?

Hi everyone!

I am off to Japan for around 10 days. I'm definitely starting with three nights in Tokyo, but after that I'm really hoping to do a couple of trips out of the city and see a few different places in Japan. As it's only 10 nights, I don't want to go too far. Where is worth a look and within a few hours' reach of Tokyo?

I'd ideally love to stay in a traditional ryokan or two, see the onsen hot springs, maybe get a closer view of Mt Fuji, and I'm also considering Kyoto for a couple of nights. Where else after Tokyo and Kyoto is wonderful to visit?

I'm less interested in ticking off major sights (castles, temples) and more in trying the food, immersing myself in the culture and seeing everything from traditional stuff to wacky/hypermodern! The only must-do for me so far is Tokyo. Let me know your tips for elsewhere. Budget is flexible.

Hey Lucy,

There are some really great places just out of Tokyo such as KamakuraYokohama and Hakone

Yokohama is awesome if you want to see a Japanese baseball game. It isn't expensive and it gives you a real taste of the Japanese in a sporting environment.

I write a travel blog, and I did a quick post about places to explore out of Tokyo so it may be of interest to you
