Favorite place in Japan?

What is your favorite place to visit in Japan, and why? Either a town or a specific location in a city, etc. If someone asked you, what single place or activity should I not miss if I am going to Japan, what would you say?

As much as I like Tokyo, the Kansai region of Japan has to be my favorite.  The region includes cities like OsakaKyotoNara, and Kobe, and other great castles and temples like Himeji Castle and Hōryū-ji.

You have to enjoy a night eating all the different foods in the Dotonbori area of Osaka, with treats like Okonomiyaki, Kushikatsu, and Takoyaki.

It's also not very far to get to Hiroshima and Itsukushima (Miyajima) from the Kansai region.

Mentioned in this answer:

  1. Osaka (city)
  2. Kyoto (city)
  3. Nara (city)
  4. Kobe (city)
  5. Himeji Castle (attraction)
  6. Hōryū-ji (attraction)
  7. Dotonbori (attraction)
