What's the best neighborhood in Izmir for a first time visitor?

I've never been to Izmir and I'm a little overwhelmed by all the hotel options. I'd like to stay in a hotel that is central and gives me good sense of what Izmir is like. I'd love to know where locals tell their friends to stay when they visit, and why those areas and hotels are special. thanks!

Alsancak Mahallesi is lovely. It's the very center. Bornova is a good residential area, too.

Katie,

Izmir has a big population (4 mio) but is a "small town". If you stay by Kordon you can visit almost everything by walking. Key Hotel, Kordon Izmir, Swiss Hotel, Karaca Hotel, Beyond Hotel, Moevenpick are my suggestions. Pick one of them which is the best for your budget.

Hi Katie,
Izmir is a big city and noisy. I recommend the neighborhoods like Kusadasi or Cesme, both are by the sea. However if you would like to experience the city life, I recommend to stay in Alsancak Mahallesi area.
