Best way to get from Milan airport to Cortona.

Has anyone driven and if so how difficult is the drive

Given the fact, the road trip takes around 4 Hrs 30 Mins, driving from Milan Linate Airport to Cortonais a good option. The route is simple & easy and while you don't get to soak in a wonderful view right from the start, as you cross Bologna, you will be gifted with a soothing view of the vineyards.

Alternatively, you can also ride on a train but you have to keep changing a 2-3 times and if you are planning to travel with heavy luggage then this might irritate you a bit!

Happy Traveling Lorraine. :)

The Italian autostrade system is very good, and my wife and I have driven not only that route, but many other routes in Italy as well.

The only area of the route that will be challenging, will be from Bolognato Florence as you cross over the Apennine Mountains, because the autostrade becomes steeper and has quite a few curves. From Florence to Cortona, the route is mostly rolling hils.

It has been our experience that even though the autostrade routes have a 130 kilometer per hour "limit", this does not seem to be adhered to. Most Italian drivers will be driving quite a bit faster.

You will of course, see an increase in traffic as you proceed through the larger cities, but most of this route will be in rural areas, and will have very low traffic conditions.

Enjoy the drive, you will be going through some beautiful countryside!

Note: If you are renting a car, European car rental companies will charge a considerable sum for a one way rental drop-off.
