Gordon from Ojai asked

Best way to get from MXP to BGY in 3.5 hours?

Have a flight landing in Milan at Malpensa (MXP) and can catch an earlier connecting flight at Bergamo (BGY), but I land at 10:40am and the connecting flight leaves at BGY at 2:15pm.

What is the fastest/cheapest way to make the connection at BGY... Is it even possible given how long it will take to get through customs and out of the airport?

I hate to say it, but after looking at the timetables, I don't think it's worth trying, unless you want to spend a lot of money for a car and driver.

Hi Gordon, it's entirely possible to get between the two. the easiest direct route is the Orio Shuttle (Route 3). It leaves both terminals at Malpensa Airport and drops off at Bergamo Orio al Serio International Airportairport (16 euro if booked in advance; travel time approx. 2hrs). Not sure if the times would work as they vary whether it's a weekday or weekend. Here is the link:

http://www.orioshuttle.com/_eng/Bergamo-Orio-al-Serio_Milano-Malpensa.cfm

If that doesn't work you could take the train from Malpensa Aeropuerto to Milano Centrale Railway Station (40-50 mins - sometimes involves a change at Milano Nord Cadorna), then train to Bergamo (40-50 minutes), then Bergamo bus to the airport (every 20 minutes). This would take a little over 2 hours if the connections all line up right. You can look up train connections on Trenitalia.

**sometimes the best train route goes instead from Malpensa to Milano Porta Garibaldi to Bergamo.

There are also direct buses from Milano Centrale to Bergamo Airport (through the same company Orio Shuttle, Route 1) that leaves every 20-30 minutes.

You will probably have to search through and find the best set of connections.

How long it takes to get though Malpensa customs and security depends on a couple factors. Are you coming from somewhere else in Europe or from outside of the continent? What terminal are you arriving at? Do you have checked bags or just carry on? If you're quick and paying attention you can get through pretty quickly (15-20 mins), but if it's really busy it can take longer than that. **note that the trains you would take are all regional, so you can take any train on that route on that day, just be sure to validate in the little yellow machine before you get on!

Hope this helps, ask away if you have any other questions!

There are not many ways to do that. I will suggest Train From Malpensa Airport to Cadorna. Then from Cadorna you go to Centrale by Subway and then you'll catch a bus to Bergamo. You should be able to that in 2 hours. Malpensa- Cadorna is 35 min. Cadorna - Centrale is 20 minutes - Centrale - Bergamo Airport is 1 hour. Good look!
