Peter from Bloomington (Indiana) asked

Must-see places in the US heartland

I'm not much of a country music fan, I'm not drawn to "luxury" resorts and I hate theme parks. With those as constraints...what are the best places to visit in the Midwestern US? Best cities (other than Chicago, which I know pretty well)? Best state or national parks? Best historic or archaeological sites? Best culture?

Indiana   Illinois   Kentucky   Ohio   Tennessee   Missouri

Hello,

Here are a couple of places to consider hitting up if you are road tripping around the Midwest:

Towns/cities:

South Bend- Home to the University of Notre Dame. You can see the university, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, and the Studebaker Museum.

Zoar-Small and rural, but with good historic homes and a few museums about local history.

Madison-The state capitol and also a college town. Beautiful botanical gardens.

St. Louis is an obvious choice for a larger city.

Louisville- 4th St is a great place for food and nightlife.

Springfield (Illinois)-Visit Lincoln's home.

Some great parks include:

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Mackinac Island.

Turkey Run State Park

Hocking Hills State Park Visitor Center

Cache River State Natural Area

Mystery Cave State Park

Happy travels!
