Marijs from Antwerp asked

South-East or South-West Coast of India?

We have about 5 days to travel through South India before we have to head to a wedding in Calcutta. We are still looking for a route to do and are doubting between the south-east coastline (Kerala or Goa) and South-West Coast (Andhra Pradesh). What would you suggest as a first time India visitor who doens't like it too crowded and loves beautiful nature. Thanks!

India   Kerala (India)   Andhra Pradesh (India)   Goa (India)   Kolkata (India)

West coast without a doubt! I might be biased because my family is from Kerala, but having lived in both Chennai and Hyderabad in the past, I have to say the Malabar (west) coast easily beats the Coromandel (east) coast in scenic value (not to mention better food). I would recommend starting in Kerala and travelling north until you reach Goa, and travel by road/bus.
Start in Kochi, spend about a day exploring the city, especially beautiful Fort Kochi area which has lots of great restaurants, galleries and cultural shows. From Kochi, head to Alleppey and spend a day or so on a house boat exploring its idyllic backwaters, while eating fresh tiger prawns. Get back to Kochi and take an overnight train or a bus to Mangalore. Have breakfast at an Udupi restaurant, and get on a day train to Goa (~ 6 hours). This route is easily one of the most beautiful train journeys the Indian Railways has to offer. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Or3qi84PLE

Lots of trains ply this route: http://indiarailinfo.com/search/mangalore-majn-to-madgaon-mao/2931/0/511
Once you reach Madgaon, there are lots of beaches check out including Arambol, Candolim, Baga etc. Definitely recommend renting a scooter and going exploring for untouched beaches and old forts! Tons of other places along this coast but this should be good for five days.
Happy travels!

For the first time, you should visit Goa,it has nice beaches with various adventurous activities too.

Kerala is also very good place, with lots of greenery and very cool weather throughout the year. You will avail the benefits to see vivid culture of South india, various dishes, historical monuments etc.

Beaches of Kerala are stunning! And amazing cuisine. It's been awhile since I was there, but I'd definitely recommend for first time visitor, especially in contrast to Calcutta. Also, Kerala has amazing cultural and social history, high rates of literacy among women, etc. Enjoy.

If you are looking to spend your time in a peaceful surrounding then go to Kerela. The time from December to January is a peak tourist time in general where places like Goa and other favorite destinations would be very crowded.

You could head to places like Munnar and other small hill stations if you prefer mountains and a hilly type area otherwise if you are looking for beaches then stay on the coast near Kochi.

go for the KeralaGoa route.... Again this is the south-west coast and not the south-east ...

kerala is serene, green with a lot of backwaters and beaches ... goa is popular for beaches and the fun crowd.

tip - south goa is less crowded than north goa

Hi Marjis,

Since you have only five days in hand, I sincerely suggest that you only visit Goa. It is a coastal state that has a lot to offer and five days of a relaxed holiday in Goa will be much better as compared to contant travelling in other states to cover tourist spots just before the wedding. There are several flights between Goa and Kolkata so reaching Calcutta too will not be a problem.

My view is that both Goa and Kerala is good for coastal enjoyment. Nowdays you will not get crowd as due to rainy seasons the all beaches are deserted and you can only enjoy the sights visiting and sea bathing etc.

Definitely South West is the best option. Goa comes first in the list  where beaches are concerned. More promotions, marketing process are done in tourism sectors in Goa where as in Kerala its still in an evolving stage.

When it comes to natural destinations,I would suggest you to visit the beaches of kerala as its more tranquil ,more natural, far from the hazels of modern fast life. Beaches in kerala mainly Kovalam BeachVarkala Beach, Alleppey Beach, Muzhappilangad (largest driving beach) , and Bekal Beach

Both Kerala, Goa and Andhra Pradesh are beautiful and are unique in nature. But if you prefer nature then I would suggest you go to Kerala first then Goa. In Andhra you will get the beach at Vizag and a mountain in Arakuvalley which is also beautiful but the rest of the state I found crowded with Hyderabad as a capital. Visit Kerala and you will know you are in God's own country (Tagline for kerala tourism :)...)

Kerala & Goa are more organized for tourism than AP, with better transport connections. If it's your first time, perhaps not be too adventurous? Both coasts are beautiful.
