Any tips for trekking on the Inca a Trail?
My biggest tip is to book as early as you possibly can. As the most popular hike to Machu Picchu, the Inca Trail can sell out several months in advance because it requires a permit; a maximum of 500 permits are allowed per day. For 2015, April through July is already sold out completely.
To check the availability of Inca Trail permits, visit http://incatrailreservations.com/travel/inca-trail-permits-availability/
1. Check availability of permit; if not available, there are other routes to Machu Picchu that you can take
2. Be prepared for the altitude - do your research
3. Pack appropriate shoes and clothing
4. Try the local food, talk to the people
5. Enjoy :-)
Hi Jane- when we went we opted to do the Inca Trail (which was amazing), and I've created a podcast episode about Peru travel tips, booking a trek, how to pack for it, etc. I know that it's said that the original Inca Trail sells out, but when we were there in November, we had a chance to do it even the very next day if we wanted to, but we didn't because it's twice as expensive as every other trail. (There are a lot of options). Maybe this episode will help you decide - there is a packing list to go with it as well - http://thebudgetmindedtraveler.com/peru-travel-tips-machupicchu-trek-and-more/
