Fairport, New York
I am traveling with a few friends and would love to see much of the Ring Road, but we don't need to see it all. We have been looking into going either East or North and then doing a quick flight after a one way car rental drop off. We would love to get in a multi day hike that brings off a road a bit, but we don't have a ton of time. Is there a route that brings balance to an Iceland trip for 10 days?
You could drive to Akureyri and then fly back, though domestic flights are pretty pricey in Iceland and you'll likely be charged for a one-way car rental. With 10 days and the desire to do some hiking, I would suggest you focus on the south coast. You could take your time driving out to Vik and then on to Jokulsarlon and Skaftafell park, spend a few days there, take your time driving back, and then finish with a day or two in Reykjavik, like so https://tripcreator.com/s/Sb7whU. You can also do some guided day tours from the city into Landmannalauger to hike--it's difficult/expensive to drive yourself as you can only take certain cars onto the F roads.
