We tried and liked:

Local Foods, it's a great sandwich place with creative ingredients and sides, all very fresh.

Benjy's good place for happy hour and dinner, the food is American with a creative twist (sometimes the creative part is not well-explained in the menu, but at least it tasted good).

Ruggles Green organic food, great sandwiches, pastas, pizzas, salads and sides, portions are huge.

Lucille's nice little restaurant close to the museum area, good lunch menu with sandwiches, salads, grilled meats, everything we had was tasty.

The Breakfast Club super traditional breakfast place in Houston, simple, no frills, good food.

Piola this is an Italian pizza and pasta place that we have in Brazil, and when in Houston I have to go there to eat the chicken with catupiry (a Brazilian creamy cheese) pizza.

Great food at the Glass Wall!!! I had their chicken fried steak, which is a great cut of meat. So tender you use your fork to cut it. Here's the description:

Corn Flake Crusted Chicken Fried Steak

beef tenderloin, smoked gouda smashers, spicy haricot verts, cream gravy. pali, riviera, pinot noir, sonoma coast pairing/add $11

My husband and friends had fish that they really enjoyed.

The service and atmosphere are good as well.

El Real Tex-Mex Cafe on Westheimer at Waugh focuses on TexMex history and heritage. Their food is very old fashioned (puffy tacos, cheese enchiladas, etc.) but high in quality and reasonably priced. Also, the site is fun - a restored vintage movie theater. They play black and white westerns on the back wall.

I've lived all life in Houston, and we have great restaurants.

Try the Wings and Waffles at The Breakfast Klub or the RVP (red velvet pancakes) at MAX's Wine Dive Houston - Washington Ave.  These places serve breakfast and lunch.  Max's also has a dinner menu.
