This is a tough one!  Depending on the experience you are looking for in Honolulu will determine the best restaurant.

Hidden Gems

This is where I go when I am in town:

  1. Kan Zaman Chef Kamal makes great food, ask for outdoor seating!
  2. Side Street Inn great local style food.  Great for late night grindz.
  3. Le Bistro possibly Honolulu's best cuisine nobody knows about.
  4. Town talented chef with all locally sourced ingredients.
  5. Nico's Pier 38

Local Fast Food

Eat like the locals with these plate lunch specials:

  1. Rainbow Drive-In
  2. L&L
  3. St Louis Drive-In Inc
  4. Zippy's
  5. Liliha Bakery (this is more of a diner than fast food, but it is a local treat)

Healthy Spots

If you want something healthy, check out:

  1. Diamond Head Cove Health Bar cant miss the Acai Bowl, best on the island.
  2. Blue Tree Cafe excellent juices and snacks!
  3. Greens And Vines best Raw food in Hawaii.
  4. ISKCON Hare Krishna Temple (Govinda's Vegetarian Buffet)
  5. HiBlend Health Bar & Cafe

Fine Dining

If you are looking for a something on the fancier side I would say:

  1. La Mer
  2. Hoku's
  3. Chef Mavro restaurant
  4. Alan Wong's Restaurant
  5. Roy's Waikiki

Great Atmosphere or Views

The following have decent food but great vibe or views:

  1. House Without a Key
  2. Hau Tree Lanai
  3. Longhi's Ala Moana
  4. Sarento's at the Top of the Ilikai
  5. Ocean House Restaurant

Tourist Traps with Fun Food

Where it lacks on food it makes up with it's fun vibe:

  1. RumFire
  2. Duke's Waikiki
  3. Tiki's Grill & Bar
  4. Shore Bird Restaurant & Beach Bar
  5. Gordon Biersch

Ok... well, its more than five... but never ask a fat man where he likes to eat.

While in Honolulu a year ago, we really loved our breakfast at Eggs 'n Things (multiple locations).  The pancakes were excellent, especially the coconut ones and I loved my omelet.

It might be eclipsed by newer, fancier restaurants, but we wanted to go to the place that sort of glamorized Hawaiian food, so we made reservations for Alan Wong's Restaurant.  It was wonderful.  I loved the décor, the service was top notch and the food was an excellent experience!

Get to Duke's Restaurant & Barefoot Barearly to get a prime seat on the patio.  Enjoy some good 'bar' food, fun cocktails, local entertainment and excellent people watching!

Helena's Hawaiian Food was probably our favourite restaurant state-wide.  It's not at all expensive, the staff are wonderful, and the food is incredible.
Hula Dog and Puka Dog Hawaiian Style are also well worth a stop.  They're scattered over the city and the islands.  My girlfriend was initially skeptical about "wasting" a meal at a hot dog stand (we're from Boston, so we don't get to Hawaii very often), but started to come around once she saw the list of tropical relishes and the bacon taro bun, and then completely changed her mind once she took a bite.
