I know this is a difficult question to pose for a foodie city like Hong Kong but what are your top 5 must-try dishes in the city? I am very keen to try really local, hawker-style food and would love to know what are the quintessential Hong Kong delicacies (savoury or sweet) that I just have to try. Thank you!
1. Claypot in Sheung wan, there are a few and most of them are good.
2. For really old school name yumcha / dim sim place, should visit here http://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/restaurant/%E4%B8%AD%E7%92%B0-%E8%93%AE%E9%A6%99%E6%A8%93/1868
its too hectic for me as in you have to fight a bit to get food, but it is authentic
for a less hectic option, try Fu Shing in Causeway Bay or Wanchai
3. Underbridge spicy crab, its a special style fried garlic type crab. highly recommend it
4. to go one of the wet markets, Happy Valley has one Shop 2, 2/F, Wong Nai Chung Market Cooked Food Centre, 2 Yuk Sau St., Happy Valley, 2882-2994.
go to second floor, and you will see the "hawker style" restaurant with plastic tables and chairs
Mido Cafe for breakfast; it is a local diner.
There are dessert places everywhere but Yuen Kee Dessert 源記甜品專家 is the one true Chinese traditional dessert.
Make sure you get openrice app while in Hong Kong to check out where else to eat or what's near you. Have fun.
