Coolest neighborhoods to stay in Hong Kong?

Starting to plan my trip to Asia, and first stop is Hong Kong! Where are the coolest areas to stay? I want to be close to great restaurants and good areas for nightlife. Hoping to stay in a younger area if you have any suggestions. Thanks!

I lived in Hong Kong for two years and I highly recommend against staying in Kowloon if you want nightlife. Kowloon is interesting from a cultural perspective, no doubt. It's much more representative of where real Hong Kongers live and work. But if you want to be in the trendy and "cool" area as your question suggests then you absolutely must stay on Hong Kong Island. Even many residents of Kowloon actually go into the island on weekends and they then face uncomfortable mini-bus journeys back after hours or expensive taxi trips.

The best districts on the island to stay in if you want to party are CentralSoho DistrictWan ChaiSheung Wan. As you can see they are all fairly close. You can stay a little further afield too because taxis are cheap and plentiful on the island itself. But all of Hong Kong's trendiest bars, clubs, restaurants, cafes and galleries are situated in these areas.

Hope to get you started here.  I was just in Hong Kong and made the mistake of staying on Hong Kong IslandKowloon is must more interesting and diverse with more things that would be interesting to a tourist traveler.  Hong Kong Island is where all the financial institutions are and while it has some great hotels and restaurants, after dark, they roll up the carpets.  Kowloon has many areas in which to stay depending on your price point but the best news of all is that their subway system is so amazing, it won't matter because it's SO very easy to get around.  Good Luck!

You'll get the best nightlife in Central but a good younger area would be Causeway Bay. Lots of shops, great restaurants around there, and some nice bars too. A very good one is Bar Pacific executive bar run by Ichiro Hiidome from Japan. His cocktails are made with fruits freshly flown from Japan - so delicious!

Kowloon is probably the best place if you want night life.  There's always bustle and something happening. Transport is wonderful-subway, bus, ferry-easy to get anywhere. In Kowloon, if you're looking for great places to eat, look up on the first floor of buildings-many wonderful places to eat are not at ground level. The Jumbo Floating Restaurant (A.R.E.L.) at Aberdeen is an experience-food is OK and you can have a sampan ride to the restaurant.
