Hilton Head Island

Best historical locations/tours on Hilton Head Island?

My wife and I are visiting Hilton Head through the end of the week. So far we've eaten ourselves silly, but it's time to exercise our brains a bit. Any recommendations for historical tours nearby? There seem to be several, but which ones are worth it?

Come to  Beaufort, one of the most historical places in the South. It is the second oldest city in SC, settled in 1711.

You can visit the museum at  Parris Island and trace the history of the early Spanish to settle this area (St. Helena was the early name), to many beautiful homes that date before the civil war.  Since it was captured by Union troops early in the war(down here there is only one war), many of its homes and building were spared

You can take one of many buggy tours or walking tours that will guide you through the historic area.  Go to the Chamber offices for a list.

Don't forget to shop our vibrant downtown area, walk along scenic Waterfront Park, and plan to eat in one of the many restaurants.  I recommend  Plums Restaurant, Luthers, or Wren Bistro, Bar and Market.

Have fun!

I've never done any historical tours on the island, and not sure how far you're willing to go, but Savannah has a nice trolley tour, about 40 min away (Old Town Trolley Tours of Savannah). Definitely worth seeing. And make sure you stop at Wet Willie's for daiquiris!

When going to Savannah, If you park at the convention center across the river from the city, you can take the free ferry from The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa to River Street.

Take the time to visit Historic Downtown Savannah its only about a 45 minute drive from Hilton Head. Charleston is another great choice but a little further.

The Coastal Discovery Museum  there on Hilton Head Island    has several tours - both of the museum property and of the nearby locations like Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge  and Port Royal    When we were there several years ago, they also had a tour of Hilton Head island but they don't seem to offer that anymore.  It also was possible to get a boat from Hilton Head to Dataw Island but I don't know if that's possible now.  I agree about Beaufort - a really nice town to visit and Port Royal and Hunting Island State Park are near there. Also we drove to Savannah for a day and from there we also visited Thunderbolt and Fort Pulaski National Monument  It turned foggy or we would have also gone to Tybee Island

There is a little company called Legacy History Tours that does private, guided tours of all of the historical sites right on Hilton head island! There are many sites related to civil war and revolutionary war - and our guy did an amazing job telling the stories. It really is fascinating to think how much important history is hidden on this beautiful little resort island. We found it by just googling history tours on Hilton head! your Guide will help you customize the tour or you can choose between themed packages like "Civil War history" or "revolutionary war history" or "early settlers and explores". The tours are about 2 1/2 hours give or take and they are car tours. I highly highly recommend this company and if you can request Rich as your guide even better!
