Tips for traveling from Helsinki to Saint Petersburg? Plane? Train? Thinking of going next summer. Any advice is appreciated!
I would recommend Allegro train as it's fast and you pass the passport control right in the train.
The St.Peter Line Limited Sivuliike Suomessa ferry is a bit shabby, in my opinion. It's only worth taking of you want a lightning visit to St. Petersburg without a visa (possible on 'cruises', i.e., a return trip with cabin).
The train is fastest, most comfortable and smoothest. Flying is actually slower once you've figured in check-in times and getting to and from airports. Russians living in Helsinki take minibuses, which are dirt cheap but uncomfortable and slow.
Hi! Check the russian-ferry site http://www.stpeterline.com/ - I think it is the most comfortable and cheap way to go to Russia from Helsinki, if you are travelling with friends. (prises can be different for a cabin)
Then there are trains - the fastest (3.30 hours) way to get to Russia - the train Allegro - the timetable and tickets here - http://pass.rzd.ru/ (30 euro one way)
And buses - http://www.luxexpress.eu/en - they always have discounts. (costs from 7 euro to 25)
Best is to take a train from Helsinki to Saint Petersburg. Timetables from www.vr.fi
