Based on my experience studying n living in Hawaii for 3 months:

(In random orders)

- visit a Farmers' Market at Diamond Head State Monument, Oahu, for fresh foods bazaar! I was addicted!

- surfing Waikiki for beginners, or North Shore for advanced

- drink Mai Tai! Never found the same mai tai again out of Hawaii.

- Sunrise at Haleakala, Maui & sunset at Mauna Kea, Hawai'i (continue for guided stargazing)

- do a brewery tour at Kona Brewing Co. & Brewpub, Hawai'i, try their beer plater tasting!

- go to a Luau & PCC, try doing Hula

- road trip Kahului-Hana stopping at any spots that interest you

- hike up to Diamond Head or Koko Head

- try spam-musubi, get it at 7-11 stores ;) yummy snack! Spam is Hawaii thing!

- pay respect by visiting Hawaii historical museums

Whatever you do, do it with aloha ;)

Most people miss out on "Upcountry" - the mountains @Makawao @Paia (one of the surfing capitols of the whole world), @Tedshe Winery and the fabulous @Lavender Garden above it all. You won't find a more interesting and delicious restaurant than @HaileMaile General Store just before Kakawao. Another great place for lunch or dinner (again at Makawao) is @Casanova's. All of these things are never-to-forget experiences.

Do a helicopter tour, drive through and make sure to see the active volcano in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, go between November and March to see the whales (I went in January and we saw many every day).

If you love shrimp and you are on the island of O'ahu then head to Giovanni's Shrimp Truck located on the famed North Shore of the island. Here you'll eat like a king for under thirteen bucks a person. Also don't forget to ask for a pen to write your name and a message on the side of the truck.

You'll find mine on the back of the truck with an Aloha from Mike Ask About Hawaii

Big Island - Kilauea

Maui - Iao Valley State Park, Haleakala at sunrise, Road to Hana, Makena Beach (Big Beach).

Oahu- Shave Ice on the North Shore, Fried Rice at Like Like Drive Inn, Pearl Harbor Memorial, snorkeling Hanauma Bay, a fruity drink at the The Royal Hawaiian

Most of my list above is in tourist guides, to experience real Hawaii I believe you need to spend more than a vacation there and work and live like a local.

if you come across any community or church festivals, you should join in.  You will get some of the best authentic local food
