Best one day excursion in Hanoi?

I'll be hitting a lot of the major sites in Hanoi in a few days but have one day at the very end with nothing planned. What are some off the beaten track activities to do that'd be appropriate for kids as well?

I assume you already have Halong Bay Vietnam on your list? There are travel agencies that will take you out for a day trip (2-3 hours one way from Hanoi).

The surrounding area of Ninh Binh AZ has some interesting sights. Most notably Tam Coc,  "Halong Bay in rice fields" is quite scenic. NB used to be the capital of Vietnam and is a 2-3 hour drive from Hanoi as well.

The Chùa Bút Tháp pagoda a couple of hours from Hanoi is very interesting and one of the oldest pagodas in Vietnam. It's located in a small rural village that is interesting to visit too purely cause it shows you every day life outside the big cities in Hanoi.

Geting there by public transport will be very tricky so you should try to organise some transport if you want to go there but I assure you that it's very nice.

For 1 day: you can visit Ninh Bình Province (Tam Coc, Trang An) or you can go to Bat Trang pottery where your kids can see the process of making potteries as well as making their own products. Another options: you can go to the organic vegetable garden near Noi Bai airport, see how Vietnamese farmers work and even join hands to do farming work w.them. Great experience.

With one day in Hanoi, I think in the morning, you can start with a walk around Hoan Kiem Lake or visiting flower markets near West Lake then visit the Temple of Literature, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, in the afternoon, you can go the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology. At night, walking around the Hanoi Old Quarter Hotel, especially in the weekend, is an interesting experience. And don't forget to taste Hanoi's foods, really delicious.
