Safest/Best route during winter without four wheel drive

I am trying to plan out a route that would accommodate travel from Green Bay, WI to Las Vegas, NV during winter. I'll be driving a car with rear wheel drive so mountains and or snow packed roads must be avoided. I know going south will be best but what about through Texas and New Mexico area, never drove through these states??

Green Bay Las Vegas

A friend of mine just did Chicago to Santa Fe (New Mexico) recently, and he went through Topeka. You can see a tip he added about the Cyrus Hotel here:

Also check TopTrips for alternate routes, and play with the locations to see different ideas. This is what my friend used for Chicago to Santa Fe:

Here are some variations for Green Bay to Vegas:

You obviously want the more Southern routes, but there are a lot of options if you play with different locations and routes.
