If you are going the southern route from St. Louis to Nashville you might stop along the way at Sainte Genevieve which is a town settled by the French around 1735.  There is a Welcome Center and a historic district with buildings that can be visited.  Then you go through Cape Girardeau and there is a place called Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area where they have hiking trails on your way to Nashville  Just east of Nashville, you ought to visit the Hermitage which was Andrew Jackson's home

If you take the northern route over to Louisville you can visit Churchill Downs  Nearby is Frankfort (Kentucky) the capitol and near there is the Salato Center  which is a free center for public education about wildlife. They have animals which are being rehabbed and there is a short walking trail.  Lexington has the famous Kentucky Horse Park where you can go to a museum, see a cross country course and visit the various horse breeds.  From there you can visit Mammoth Cave National Park before you go to Gatlinburg

If you are driving the route that goes through Nashville, you could take a detour up to the Grand Ole Opry or Gaylord Opryland Resort. Or some people have recommended checking out Franklin (Tennessee).

Here are a couple questions on Trippy that might be useful:

small towns near Nashville

outdoor activities for kids

When you get close to Gatlinburg, I've heard a lot of good things about Dollywood for kids.

Mentioned in this answer:

  1. Grand Ole Opry (attraction)
  2. Gaylord Opryland Resort (hotel)
  3. Franklin (Tennessee) (city)
