Most of my experience has been flying into Southwest Florida International Airport, which is a nice airport with decent rental cars. Then heading onto Sanibel and Captiva Island to hit the beaches. Those are very relaxing areas, with a lot of older residents, so don't expect a lot of excitement. It's a nice place to slow down and the beaches are known for collecting shells. There are some really nice upscale houses on Captiva that you might be able to rent with a group of friends.

Make sure to visit Edison Park Historic District and enjoy the beautiful banyan trees and historic homes. For something unusual, visit Koreshan State Historic Site to see where a utopian community lived in the late 1800s. If you are interested in flea markets visit Fleamasters Main Market it has something for everyone. For a blast from the past see The Shell Factory and Nature Park for the ultimate touristy experience. Fort Myers Beach has the a nice beach with a lot of fun shops and restaurants. Have a burger Pete's Time Out. Note that traffic can be very heavy in this area. Have a wonderful key lime ice cream cone and sample some strawberry orange juice at Sun Harvest Citrus and have some citrus fruit sent home. Buy some beautiful and tasty artisan chocolates from Norman Love Confections. The raspberry and key lime are wonderful. Enjoy some sushi at the cool Blu Sushi restaurant. If you do go to Captiva Island, enjoy some orange crunch cake, or any other cake, at Bubble Room.
