Liv from Cape Cod asked

Top 3 must-dos in Ft. Lauderdale?

My husband and I are making a quick trip to Ft. Lauderdale and would love to know what’s on your top 3 list of “must-sees” there. We love the outdoors, sports, dive bars, shopping, good entertainment. Not huge museum/indoor people but open to it if it's awesome.

Fort Lauderdale (Florida)

Hello Liv! I spent a beautiful week in Fort Lauderdale beachfront (the city beaches are pristine). It has plenty of opportunities to swim and sunbathe, and/or wind surfing, jet skiing, boating, snorkeling, scuba diving, sightseeing cruises, etc. I remember that I stayed the whole day enjoying the view and visiting a few nearby beaches like Deerfield Beach. There are a lot of beachfront hotels (my daughter and I stayed at Bahia Mar Fort Lauderdale Beach - a DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel ) and excellent restaurants on the waterfront. I don't have pictures to show as we just brought our video camera.

PS - I will also add a little bit of shopping. I love to shop at Sawgrass Mills.

Hope this helps!!

Well, to start with, Ft. Lauderdale is a "beach city" so anything I suggest is going to include some beach visit time.  My suggestion would be for you to spend a bit of time at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park, which is directly across A1A Highway from the Bahia Mar Hotel.  This park has beach and trees and grills, so it is a great beach from just about any comparison, and when you realize that all other beaches north & south from there, do not have trees, you realize how great it really is!  And oh yeah, there is a good amount of parking there, just get there early!

Speaking of "dive bars", there are a number of them up and down A1A, places like;  Dirty Blondes and the Elbo Room. These two are about as dive bar as you can get!

As regards shopping, there are tons of the typical beach city t-shirt shops up and down A1A next to the beach, but if you are looking for something larger, there is a huge mall named The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale where you can find more traditional shopping.

OK, so for sports, you need to pick from Jai Alai or harness racing. Both of which are not in Ft. Lauderdale, so you would have to drive a bit to find either.  I am assuming that you are going to have a rental car right?  Use Google to find either location.

There are other Florida-only things to do in that area, for example, air boat rides in the Everglades Air Boat Ride, see the gators and the swamp, at the same time!

Or perhaps, if you have ever been wake boarding, drive on over to and give it a try. Cable board riding is way different than riding behind a boat, but it is a lot of fun!

There is a lot of seafood to be found there, some good, some not so good, use to help you with finding some of the better seafood restaurants.  There are quite a few, and Yelp is your best source of info on what is good currently.

I hope I have given you some ideas, have fun!

Go to Butterfly World, it's one of the coolest things i've ever done. There was sooo many, it was really cool seeing such a cluster of butterflys in one place. If you like the outdoors, Flamingo Gardens is an awesome botanical garden, Sawgrass Recreation Park is another thing to do that's fun and outdoors! Lots of wildlife here. Walk through Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, it's so pretty! The greenery is so beautiful during the spring and summertime. Have fun!
