I actually spent my semester abroad in Florence in a part-hostel, part-'pensione' (apartment-style student housing) called
Ostello Gallo d'Oro Hostel. Translating to "Hostel of Gold", this charming hostel is run by husband and wife team Massimo and Silvia, who will spoil their guests with homemade Italian cooking for your meals of choice- think pesto lasagna, gnocchi bolognese, and ribollita stew amongst the rest of their lovingly-prepared, classic Italian dishes.
The hostel is located about two blocks from the bustling
Piazza San Marco, the center where every bus in Florence will pass to make stops throughout the day- this makes for astoundingly easy access to almost anywhere in the city and the nearby suburbs.
Also close to Ostello Gallo D'Oro, in Piazza San Marco, is the site of Michelangelo's original esteemed 'David' sculpture at the Accademia di belle arti. This gallery features a wide range of art, including some of the most antiquated Italian sculptures to some more modern paintings.
I have to suggest a gelato stop, because not event the smallest amount of time spent in Italy is complete without one: Le Botteghe Di Leonardo is the perfect spot to indulge in the most authentic, house-made Italian ice cream that is a far cry from the typical touristy knockoffs located more central to the big sites. With rich flavors, like dark chocolate orange and nutella, I promise you won't walk out feeling even the slightest bit unsatisfied. In fact, I'd be surprised if you aren't tempted to make two stops in one day!
I hope this helps!

We had good luck in all Italy towns and cities by just walking around and asking to see their rooms for rent when you are the sign "Camere" they were very happy to show us and didn't react rudely if we said we would keep looking. Have a great trip!
