San Luis Obispo
I heard that there are cool tours of places in the countryside like of wineries, farms, vinegar, cheese, and proscuitto makers. Does anyone have any favorites that I must see for this experience?
You need to go to Spannocchi. Situated on more than 1000 acres of land is Spannocchia, a working organic farm, raising pigs for salumi, olives for oil and wood, chickens for eggs, fresh vegetables, and fruits for jams and honey. The 900 year old setting is perfect for doing nothing, taking a hike to a nearby abandoned castle, or keeping busy with Olive oil tasting, Eating with and learning from the many interns who keep the place running, or counting cats.
Each night at 7pm there is complementary wine on the terrace where you might reconnect with the Flowerpot kitty who slept on your lap all afternoon while you read in the sun.
At Spannocchia they practice Sustainable agriculture and are about 80 percent self sufficient when it comes to food. You might hear more English than Italian thanks to the interns so it’s not exactly an immersive experience into Italian culture, but what the entire staff does is important for every culture and they make you feel welcome in the old home and by the time you leave you have become a part of another family, Separate from the main buildings at Spannocchia are 6 different farm houses available for rent.
It doesn’t suck.
