Will be on our honeymoon in Sept for week in Florence. We will have a car and love dining, wineries, shopping, cooking, quaint places etc. We are in our 50's and we are not big on structured tours or museums and typical touristy trap places. Would appreciate any suggestions. This is our first trip to Italy.
You are in for a treat! Tuscany is wonderful and, in September (except in Florence ) many of the tourists will have gone home but the weather will be lovely. Are you hoping to base yourself in Florence? There are beautiful hill towns near Florence, maybe take a day and travel to San Gimignano and on to SienaSiena needs a whole day and it never feels crowded - even with lots of tourists. There are lots of great places to eat lunch and spend an afternoon tasting wine! Another worthwhile trip is to Lucca visit Province of Pistoia on the way. You'll probably want to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa but Pisa town is pretty nondescript after that. I loved Parma and Modena Both towns have lovely small shops. Metropolitan City of Bologna has some wonderful restaurants and wine bars, splash out on I Carracci Ristorante (worth every cent) If you are considering ONE tour I suggest a wine tour. Most will take you to 3-4 wineries with lunch included. If you really want to do it alone don't miss Antinori nel Chianti Classico winery, about half an hour from Florence. Have a great trip!
