Hi, life on Nadi is very different than other smaller islands outside Nadi, such as the Mamanuca Islands and Yasawa Island chain.  When sugar cane was a large plantation business in Fiji in the 1800's, many non-Fijians were brought into Fiji from India for labor.  It is the ancestors of these people imported into Fiji, that comprise approximately 40% of the population on the larger island of Nadi, and so the culture is more Indo-Fijian, with Indo-Fijians making a large impact on the economy of Nadi.  It is really only in the smaller out islands, that the Fijian culture is found of the traditional Fijian village life.  An experience staying in a resort on Nadi may be very different than the experience staying in one of the out island locations and you may find better beaches, snorkeling and scuba diving in the out island locations, however the various choices of where to stay may be more rustic than in Nadi.

If you can afford it, go to the Islands.

If that is out of your price range, go somewhere on the Coral Coast - you will experience more of Fiji, than if you were to stay in Denarau Island.

Coral Coast (1-2hrs drive from Airport depending how far you go)

-Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort

-InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa

Denerau (10-15 mins from Airport and close to Marina for day trips to the Islands):

-Sheraton Fiji Resort

-Hotel Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa

Hope this helps a bit, I have a Fiji travel blog at meandfiji dot com

Happy travelling
