Must-go places for weekend trips from Edinburgh?

I will be having a study exchange in Edinburgh, UK, from September to December this year. I plan to budget-travel every weekend around the UK, either alone or with a group of friends.

Where are the must-go places for mainly sightseeing (or other purposes recommended) considering I have limited time of 2 days per trip for approximately 13 weeks?

Any accommodations recommendations will be much appreciated, too!

Thank you.

What  are your interests? So much is available by public transportation and tour buses.

A day trip to Glasgow for art, architecture, shipbuilding history. Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum has art and natural history.

St Andrews for ruins and coastal scenery and golf.

You could find something special in Edinburgh every weekend there is so much. The Edinburgh Castle alone deserves a long day.

I believe North Berwick has a sea bird sanctuary, Scottish Seabird Centre.

If you get a 3 day weekend the head for an island.

I adored St Andrews-even thought it's best known for its golf courses and the fact that Prince William met Kate at school there-the cathedral and ruins are beautiful and the town itself is just delightful.  Also enjoyed the lake area of Fort William.
