Detroit, Mackinac Island

Meeting friends in Mackinac Island in August - where else to go?

Struggling with determining an itinerary that includes areas other than Mackinac Island. Ideally, flying from Baltimore to an airport (TBD) to arrive in time to meet a group at the ferry in Mackinaw City on Friday. Leaving the island on Sunday and would like to extend our stay for a couple nights and then head back to same airport. Flight times into Detroit are better than Grand Rapids. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Fly into Grand Rapids, MI. Avoid Detroit. Stay Downtown. Drive to Frankenmuth, Mi. Stay at the Bavarian Inn. Drive to the Island. From the Island Drive to Glen Arbor, Michigan. Then to Grand Haven, Holland, Saugatuck, South Haven and back to Grand Rapids.

If you're flying back out of Detroit, I'm assuming you might be driving from Mackinaw City to Detroit? If so, you could try the coastal route along US-23. You'll get a lot of great views of Lake Huron, and you could stop at various lighthouses, and the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
Since you're going in August, you MUST go to the Cheeseburger festival in Caseville. Look it up!

Mentioned in this answer:

  1. Detroit (city)
  2. Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary (premise)
  3. Caseville (city)

Fly into Flint or Lansing or South Bend.
