Colorado Trip in Mid May

I'm driving to Denver in mid May for 4 nights holiday but would like to stay somewhere else with access to the national Park, great scenery and a bit of hiking/trail running. I was considering staying a couple of nights in either Boulder or Steamboat Springs. Any advice on which is best or should I be considering somewhere else too?

Denver (Colorado)   Steamboat Springs (Colorado)   Boulder (Colorado)

Definitely check out Steamboat Springs, but it's going to be mud season there in May.

Thanks. I guess I could do a long day trip to Steamboat from denver and stay somewhere that would give me access to another part of the State. How about Glenwood Springs? What do you think about that as a base for a couple of days after Denver?
