Best locations to stay in Denver

My husband and I are traveling to Denver this summer (June) for a few days to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We are interested in booking an airbnb but I have no idea where to even start looking, location wise! We are interested in being near the downtown area, and will definitely do a day trip somewhere close for a hike (hanging lake!?). Any suggestions on where specifically to search for places to stay? Not trying to break the bank, as we are more interested in spending money on food and experiences :)

Try places in River North Art District (River North), Capitol Hill (Denver), Highlandor LoDo (Lower Downtown) if you absolutely want to be walking distance from or in downtown. However these areas may be pricy. If you're willing to walk a little bit or take a bus then you could look in the  Lower HighlandsCity Park EsplanadeWashington ParkSloan Lake, or even Edgewaterneighborhoods. If you want to possibly save some money on lodging but remain close to downtown, you could take your chances in Globeville. It's not the best area of town, but it's getting better is a legit old neighborhood. Depending on where you're from, Globeville might feel downright homy. Anyway, hope this helps. I'm sure I missed some, but that's most of them.

The Highlands RanchHighlands is a cute neighborhood near downtown. Not walking distance really, but a short drive. Cute shops/restaurants there. Cherry Creek is a little further from downtown (10 min appx) but more great shops/restaurants. Cherry Creek is pretty ritzy, whereas Highlands is older & funky. The The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs is worth staying at if you want to venture away. Amazing spa, pool, golf. Top notch everything- but $$$$

Hanging Lake is not a day trip "hike" from Denver. It is located near Glenwood Springs .

I am not familiar with the AirBnB market in Denver, but if you want to be near hiking, but in the city, check out Golden (Colorado)  The The Golden Hotel, an Ascend Collection hotel and Table Mountain Inn are both very nice choices for a stay in Golden and you'll be surrounded by nice day hikes.

June is a beautiful month to be in Colorado!

Denver just instituted a license tax on airbnb and like short term rentals. There have been reported over 1000 people already not in compliance being fined. Whatever rental you select check that they have a valid license or you may find yourself without a rental at the last minute. If you choose to go with a hotel I highly recommend either Hotel Teatro or The Crawford Hotel

You might want to check out the Patterson Inn. It is located in the downtown area near Colfax (a lively street) but very nice. My only caution would be to be careful walking alone. Colfax can be very colorful but because it is busy there are lots of people around. Just take safety precautions. Great sights though all around within walking distance.
