Best may be in the eye of the beholder (and I'm interpreting "historic" to mean significant vs old), but some of note:

-Raj Ghat, memorial to Mahatma Gandhi
-Jama Masjid, the largest and best-known mosque in India
-Red Fort, an historic citadel and UNESCO World Heritage Site
-Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, the Sikh Temple in New Delhi
-Humayun's Tomb, stunning gardens, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site
-Qutab Minar, a soaring minaret and another UNESCO Site
-Laxmi Narayan Temple, Hindu temple

Go to Humayun's Tomb, based on which the Taj Mahal is designed. Also, visit the majestic Red Fort and take a walk through the bylanes of Chandni Chowk and eat the yummy paranthas at Paranthe Wali Gali

Everyone will tell you to see the Red Fort, and perhaps it's a must-see in terms of history...but it's actually kind of run-down and depressing. We really enjoyed the Qutab Minar and Safdarjung Tomb best. Those were our two faves in our time in Dehli.
