Katie from Los Angeles asked

What's the best neighborhood in Dallas for a first time visitor?

I've never been to Dallas and I'm a little overwhelmed by all the hotel options. I'd like to stay in a hotel that is central and gives me good sense of what Dallas is like. I'd love to know where locals tell their friends to stay when they visit, and why those areas and hotels are special. thanks!

Stay at the Belmont Hotel Dallas in the newly gentrified neighborhood of Oak Cliff. It is right next door to Smoke, an insanely good upscale take on BBQ from super chef Tim Byre. It is probably one of my favorite restaurants in Dallas. Other good BBQ in the area is Lockhart Smokehouse, in the Bishop Arts District, and of course Pecan Lodge in Deep Ellum.

Hotels in the Downtown are central. They allow you to get to most places. The only downfall is expensive parking. The Arts District is great near downtown. Also, you can hit the freeway to shop at N Park Center or the Galleria Dallas quickly.

The Historic District is a great, central location with access to everywhere. I recommend the Adolphus Hotel.

Downtown close to the Dallas Museum of Art, Klyde Warren Park, West Village, Cedar Springs, or venture 20 minutes north to the suburbs--tons of activities, shops, indoor and outdoor recreation around The Colony and Frisco (Texas).

The SOVA Micro-Room & Social Hotel is in the heart of downtown Dallas and a good and affordable place to start. That way you can get your sea-legs and decide which area of Dallas most interests you. It is also close to public transportation to take you Uptown Dallas or to Deep Ellum.

There are several options for really nice hotels downtown. Newer ones include HALL Arts Hotel Dallas, Curio Collection by Hilton and Thompson Dallas. $$$. You can sign up for a Segway tour of downtown that gets you around and hits the highlights of our history.
If you are traveling through on US 75 there are options near Southern Methodist University. (Mockingbird exit) The neighborhood is lovely, known as the Park Cities and would be safe.

In my opinion, it very much depends on what sort of environment you're looking for along with things you want to do. Staying in a hotel Downtown gives lots of options for both riding, walking, frog hopping, and segway adventures. You're close to most of the major Arts District, not far from the Design DistrictDeep Ellum has some great restaurants and eclectic choices of live music. Klyde Warren Park is fantastic on a nice day, people watching, food trucks, movies, etc. As with any big city environment just be aware of your surroundings. HAVE FUN. The Statler Dallas, Curio Collection by Hilton is a fun hotel, fun roof, really there are a lot, check their yelp. Have fun!

Uptown Dallas is great. Great food and locales for shopping. Just a short drive from the Downtown area as well without having to always be in the middle of traffic when you leave the place you are staying in. Lower Greenville is also a short drive away with many more restaurants as well as shops. Drive up to the White Rock Lake area and walk around the lake or visit the Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Garden if you want to spend some time in nature.
