Good surf spots around Split, Croatia

I’ll be in Croatia around the middle of next May and I would love to find some great surf spots there. I know the beaches are great, but how is the surfing? I’ll be in Split for about three days and then have three days where I can go wherever. Also, can I rent boards there? I didn't plan on bringing mine to Europe.

I was just in Split a few months back and did quite a bit of swimming.  I never saw water that was anything but glass-smooth.  It's the Adriatic and is thoroughly protected by Italy from any swells.

That said, the swimming is fabulous...  There aren't many sandy beaches, but the Croatians tend to build ladders off the rocks all over the place.  The north side of Marjan (walk west out of town) had the best spots.

We have a blog post about Split here with a handy map:

The swimming around  Dubrovnik was a bit better in our opinion, but both were awesome.  We have a pretty useful Dubrovnik post here:

Hi Alex,

Your best bet is Bracisland, especially Zlatni Rat. Hopefully the conditions will be right for surfing. The sights there are amazing so you'll enjoy the trip even if you don't get to surf.

You can also try the neighboring Hvarisland.
