What are my chances of seeing sea turtles in Costa Rica and where is the best place to see them? My trip is scheduled for late spring.
Hi Natalie, we saw olive ridleys in Nosara (Playa Ostional) in late April last year. They come to nest in mass numbers there quite a few times a year. Of course the timing varies, but you could get lucky. The one we caught was the first arribada of the season. Have a great trip!
Typically the season starts in June and last year did start a little early. If you are coming just to see turtles, come in late June. Ostional is the haven for turtles and tourists. Find a beach south of the crowds and you are sure to have a private viewing. Pretoma & Turtle Trax have volunteers on Caletas, Corazalito, San Miguel & Coyote. You can go on a night patrol with them and watch the ladies make their nests and then take part in a release if there are hatchlings in the hatchery!
Definetely go to Ostional Beach, and must be between September & October, please look into web, hope you like.
Hi Natalie! What month are you planning to travel? Late spring- April/May is usually somewhat of a down time in turtle nesting- you are probably more likely to see turtles nesting in March or later into summer- June/July. Nesting seasons vary by species. If you are looking to see turtles during spring Tortuguero National Park is probably your best bet.
