Nicoya Peninsula & Arenal/Monteverde Split. Get the best of two of the countries rainforests, both easy access..great remote places off the beaten path. Hotel Las Caracolas in Mal Pais is awesome and Cristal Azul Boutique Retreat often has great deals, just contact them.

Hi Elisabeth, I'm not sure what your budget is, but the Dominical and Uvita areas of Costa Rica are full of amazing small boutique resorts and great deals. TikiVillas Rainforest Lodge is beyond incredible, and it's an great deal in comparison to many of the larger resorts in Costa Rica. The "town" of Uvita is about one hour south of Manuel Antonio, but it feels like a different world and is far less touristy, but still touristy enough to get by easily. There are some really great restaurants in the area as well - one of the best meals of my entire life was had at Exotica in Ojochal.

If you're not totally set on a resort, check out airbnb as well. We did a resort half the time and rented a house through airbnb the other half, and loved it. There are some great options for under $100 a night, and you really feel like a local.

Santa Teresa has many visitors from New York that enjoy it. It is a little further out but the general area also has many budget offerings that are tops. In Montezuma you can even do a work stay and stay for less cash while helping and learning about butterflies (Butterfly that look like Owls in Costa Ricas jungles), and other natural organisms in the area. Ryan is an entrepreneur from the USA who can show anyone how to do it right in Costa Rica and makes a mean home-brew ale too!
