Columbia, South Carolina

What to do in Columbia, SC and/or in its surrounding area?

Hey everyone,

We'll be flying from DC to Charleston, SC, where we'll have a roadtrip down to Miami. But we have some friends from North Columbia who would like to meet us. Since we don't want them to drive so far south, neither do we want to drive too far up north (wouldn't make sense since we've decided to fly from DC to Charleston!), we were thinking about meeting them halfway, somewhere around Columbia (about 3hours away from Charleston). But is it worth to spend a day or two in Columbia, SC? What is there to do and see? We'd prefer to stay in the outskirts, unless there's really nothing and/or there are some really interesting stuff to do in the city.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Columbia is a great place to visit. Plan to stay at the sheridan hotel on Main Street or the Inn at USC Wyndham Garden(both hotels in interesting historic buildings). The South Carolina State Museum, Riverbanks Zoo and gardenWoodrow Wilson Family HomeColumbia Museum of Art  are worth taking in. The State Capital has tours, too. If you like less structure, there are several neat river walks along the Congaree National Parkor you can wander around The Vista or Five Points areas. Or, if you are interested in history, check out the Historic Columbia website for various walking tours in historic neighborhoods. If you are interested in baseball, the new minor league stadium (Fireflies) is very nice. If you are willing to drive, the Congaree National Park is about 15 minutes away. For food, try Blue MarlinMotor Supply Company Bistro116 State StTerra RestaurantMr Friendly's New SouthernBourbon, or The Oak Table. For lunch, Cafe Strudel or the Spotted Salamander Cafe And Cateringare both good choices. Have fun!
