The Chicago Architecture Foundation river cruise is a must in nicer weather, their docents are excellent and you can see all of the architecture along the Chicago River.  They also have a variety of walking tours.  There are plenty of spots you can also visit on your own, the Chicago Cultural Center is a stunning building, a former Chicago Public Library, there are two stained glass domes, one a Tiffany and beautiful mosaics going up the stairs on the Washington Street side.  Just up the street is Macy's on State (Marshall Fields to all us locals), there is a Tiffany mosaic ceiling if you wander to the Clinique counter and look up.  You can also visit the James R. Thompson Center, known as the State of Illinois building for locals, which is an interesting bit of modern architecture (during the week, business hours only), Chicago City Hall, the Marquette Building, the The Rookery during business hours.  Personally not a fan of jazz but I understand Andy's Jazz Club on Hubbard is good and you might also make the trek up to the The Green Mill which is not in Cook, IL but rather the northside of Chicago.  Ties to Al Capone are tenuous, he was a southsider, not a northsider, but it's a well known spot.

There is a top Chicago Architecture Foundation River CruiseI went to years ago that is top notch. There are many companies plying their wares there. So online research and reviews is the way to go. Beautiful. Check out the video here:

If you've watch the movie The Break Up with Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston, the movie is based there and there are many scenes of the river.

I would definitely give yourself about 3 days for architecture/art tours, make sure you hit the Chicago Architecture Foundation first for great tour guides and ideas. Don't  just do the boat tours, you need to make sure u do a walking architecture tour to go inside the buildings and see things at street level. You could definitely hit some great Jazz places in a couple nights. Some of the best: Jazz ShowcaseGreen Mill Jazz Club both are on opposite ends of downtown and both very different. Enjoy !
