Katie from Los Angeles asked

What's the best neighborhood in Charlotte for a first time visitor?

I've never been to Charlotte and I'm a little overwhelmed by all the hotel options. I'd like to stay in a hotel that is central and gives me good sense of what Charlotte is like. I'd love to know where locals tell their friends to stay when they visit, and why those areas and hotels are special. thanks!

Charlotte (North Carolina)

I'm not sure about best places to stay.  But to check out I would say NoDa, Plaza Midwood, and some fo the great parks like Latta Plantation Nature Center and Reedy Creek Nature Center

It depends on how old you are. If you're young, you might want to consider an uptown hotel. If you're over 35, you might want to consider a hotel in the SouthPark area. Uptown Charlotte center city has nightlife but very little shopping and South Park has shopping and very little nightlife. South Park you can walk around and embrace the outdoors. Uptown, it's just city life. Hope that helps! Personally I would be worried about what I'm going to do in Charlotte as opposed to where I'm going to stay.

I'd recommend staying in Uptown - it has the most hotel options, you can walk to bars, restaurants, and museums, and take a cheap Uber or Lyft to the other main neighborhoods (South End, Plaza MidwoodNoDaDilworth Road East) . You can also take the light rail from Uptown into Southend (it will run to NoDa soon but is not operational yet).

If my friends were coming to Charlotte, I would only let them stay Uptown or South Park area.  You really need a car to get around the Queen City, if your plans don't include a car, Uptown would be best.

One of my favorite hotels Uptown is Hyatt House Charlotte/Center City this is a small boutique style/half chain like hotel with terrific black out shades in the rooms.  And most rooms are one bedroom suites!  It kind of doesn't matter where you stay Uptown area,  I would search by price.

In South Park area I would stay at the Hampton Inn & Suites Charlotte/South Park at Phillips Place you can walk to Dean and Deluca, restaurants, Whole Foods, mall and there's free parking.  If pricing is better, all the Marriott chains are in South Park too.  I just really love the location of the Hampton Inn at Phillips Place.

Westinghouse Boulevard is a great option! It's right downtown, within walking distance to lots of fantastic restaurants, bars, museums, and fun little places to discover. I am hosting our welcome reception for my wedding in October there and that's where all my guests have booked to stay. Check out the EpiCentreDiscovery PlaceAnheuser Busch Dandelion Market, and so much more right there!

I'm partial to the area around SouthPark Mall myself. Nice shops and restaurants. We have a light rail system that can take you all over the city as well.

It depends on the vibe you're looking for.
Artsy/nightlife - NoDa or Plaza Midwood
Highend dining/shopping - SouthPark or Myers Park
For sure visit the U.S. National Whitewater Center!

The SouthPark area has a lot of things to see and do as well as hotels. Also consider hotels near the Charlotte Premium Outlets, all new hotels... Courtyard by Marriott Charlotte Steele Creek is very nice and only a year or so old. There are lots of restaurants and shopping nearby.

I am actually on the border to Charlotte in Gastonia (North Carolina). This is due to not wanting to be in all the congestion. If you want to stay downtown you will need to check with others. On the outskirts there are nice areas that's not as busy. Hope your hunting goes well.
