From Boston to Charleston one stop on the way back might be Chincoteague Island to see the wild ponies.  This route would take you up along the eastern shore of Maryland and Delaware.  On the way down I might stop in Hershey or near Lancaster (Pennsylvania)in the Pennsylvania Dutch country.  If you are there on the day it is open, you can go to the old market.  Then for the second stop maybe Nags Head on the OBX or New Bern

Hi Marianne,
I did the road trip to Charleston from New York City a few years ago. Here were the stops, (DC and Richmond on the way to Charleston and Philadelphia on the way back to NYC):
  1. Washington, DC - explore the National Mall, and visit the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.
  2. Richmond , VA - check out Richmond beer trail.
  3. Philadelphia - visit the historic sites - Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Reading Terminal Market and walk/run the steps of Philadelphia Museum of Art (like Rocky) and snap a picture with the bronze statue of Rocky.

Hope this info helps.
