Can anyone suggest a "halfway" stopping point for a road trip from Detroit MI to Charleston SC in April 2017? Just need clean one night accommodations close to freeway.
It's a 13 hour drive which isn't that much when split into two legs. The halfway point between Detroit and Charleston would be in West Virginia but would be south of Charleston in Beckley Beckley is 7 hours south of Detroit, which would leave 6 hours for the following day. There is a Baymont Inn, a Holiday Inn and several other hotels right off the highway there.
A good halfway point would be the "other" Charleston - Charleston (West Virginia). It's the capital of West Virginia and therefore gets plenty of visitors, so it has all the hotel/restaurant chains you'd find anywhere else in the USA.
Detroit to Charleston seems a bit ambitious for a 2-day trip. To avoid fatigue (which is the #3 cause of road accidents behind alcohol/drugs and weather) I'd recommend splitting it into 3 days. Perhaps Detroit-Athens (Ohio) (a college town), Athens-Charlotte, Charlotte-Charleston SC. Each leg should take around 6-8 hours.
