I'd recommend Sullivan's Island or Isle of Palms. Folly Beach is my favourite surfing spot, and it has some decent accommodation options, but the beach isn't quite as nice or as scenic in my opinion. Wild Dunes Resort is a large full-service resort in IOP, and AirBNB has plenty of options in both locations.

Myrtle Beach/the "Grand Strand" is another option about 75-90 minutes' drive north of Charleston. Some find it tacky, but it's great for kids, there are plenty of hotels/rentals to be had at all price ranges, and the beach is fantastic.

If you want something a bit quieter, then Beaufort, also about 75 minutes away from Charleston, is a quaint, well-restored old Southern town with a nice beach around it.

The closest ocean beach to Charleston is probably Sullivan's Island and next closest would be Isle of Palms and Folly Beach. Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina in Mt Pleasant has a small beach in addition to the pool.

I would stay anywhere is Mount Pleasant! They have amazing beach homes to rent and great restaurants. One restaurant you must check out is the Post House!

I don't think there are many places actually in Mt Pleasant with beaches. You have to go out to Sullivan's Island to rent a beach house. · (1 likelikes)

Rosalie Anne, you are absolutely right! I wrote my post before my morning coffee. I meant Suulliva's Island and not Mt. Pleasant. · (0 likelikes)

It would depend on what you're looking for. Surf vibe with a public boardwalk and a cornucopia of restaraunts and bars would be Folly Beach. If you're looking for family oriented with less dining options, try Isle of Palms. If seclusions is more your speed, Sullivan's Island. Good luck and enjoy!

Hi. Sullivan's Islandis probably the closest (on the Mount Pleasant (South Carolina) side), and Isle of Palms is right next to Sullivan's. Both would be excellent places for a large family beach trip, but I'd lean towards Isle of Palms....a little more upscale. Both are within 15 minutes of downtown Charleston.
