Karin from Miami Beach asked

Is Hermanus worth a trip from Cape Town?

We're heading to SA this month and are planning our road trip from Cape Town to the wine regions. Is it worth to drive along the coast and stop overnight in Hermanus before heading to Franschhoek? We would like to see the whales, anyone done that?

Hermanus is definitely worth a visit, the drive there in itself is really beautiful with mountains on the left and ocean on the right. Just 2 things to bear in mind, whale season is only from July to December and spotting is not guaranteed outside of that time. Secondly, Hermanus is quite a way past Franschoek - Franschhoek is about 40 minutes outside of Cape Townand Hermanus about 2 hours if you are a laid back driver so it would be a longer round trip.

Hermanus is definitely a great idea! The drive is beautiful, but I would do it before or after Franschhoek as Franschoek is merely 40 minutes outside CT (and a lovely trip on its own - try go to Babylonstoren while you're there) whilst Hermanus is a good 2 hour drive (more if you stop along the way). Whale season is from July onward though so spotting is not guaranteed before then. You can also do the shark cage diving in Hermanus or just outside which is very exciting.

Yes! Hermanus is a beautiful coastal down and it's really not far from Cape Town at all, about an hour and a half. We did some great whale watching right off the coast.

Hermanus is definitely worth a visit. There is a beautiful road from there to Franschhoek via Caledon. It goes through the Hemel en Aarde (heaven and earth) valley which is also a wine region in its own right. From Caledon you go on the No to Cape Town but then turn off towards Franschoek a few kilometers outside Caledon.
