Road trip to start in Calgary and see Lake Louise, Banff, Jasper.

Need help planning the above trip late Aug.-early Sept. for about 3 weeks.  Should we rent a car and do it independently or do a tour.  If tour, which ones are the best. Also, sample itineraries would be appreciated.

You will need a car to see everything you want to see in all of these places. Stay in Banff/Canmoreto see those areas and daytrip to Lake Louise. Go to Johnston Canyon, Lower Falls in Banff and hike to Grassi Lakes in Canmore. Walk around Lake Louise and also go to Moraine Lake nearby. Then take Icefields Parkway up to Jasper, stopping to look/walk on the glacier. Go to Maligne Lake outside of Jasper. All beautiful spots!

Thanks! How many days should I allow? How far from Banff to Jasper? Any good places to stay?

It depends if you want sightsee or hike. We did sightseeing and some easy to moderate hikes. I guess 4-5 days in Banff and 3 in Jasper. You can easily stretch out to 10 days total. There's a hotel in the Icefields Visitor Center to break up the trip between the towns. Lots of places to stop at on Icefields Parkway - Peyto Lake, etc. We went in August.
