Driving through Canada to go to Michigan; passport?

It seems that the shortest route from SE New England to Michigan is through Canada; would we need passports?

Thank you.

Most definitely. You're entering another country and you'll need to go through Customs. TIP: Make sure you don't have any guns in the car. Gun laws in Canada are much more stringent than in the US.

Have a great trip!

Yes you will. You can get an enhanced driver's licence in some states to go through Canada, for $50? It is a beautiful journey. Pay for the toll road around or near Toronto to avoid heavy traffic. Stop and take a boat ride near the Thousand Islands, which the dressing was named for. It is a beautiful journey. Plan to enter Michigan at Port Huron.

Yes, you need passports or enhanced driver's license. And yes, that includes young children too if you're bringing any. And if both parents aren't going, you'll need a signed note from the other parent.

I'm assuming you'll be crossing at Buffalo/Fort Erie then heading to Sarnia to cross into Port Huron. And you're right, you'll save a few hours that way for sure. And way less traffic.

When crossing the border, you're only allowed max 1 carton of cigarettes and 1.5 litres (two 26oz bottles) of booze (or 1 case of beer) per person. Doesn't matter that you're bringing it back to the States. Canadian customs is fanatical about cigs and booze. Plus, no canned meat and no fruit. Also, just in case you're camping, no firewood.

And like Marie-France said, no guns... actually no weapons at all. I don't even think a bow and arrows would make it across.
