Definitely look into Whistler/Blackcomb Lodge Ltd or Banff. Great mountains and lots to do in the villages when you're not boarding.

Since you are from California I expect you will be targeting either BC or Alberta in Canada on the west coast. You have many options and most of bigger ski resorts have both a nice scenery and very good runs for all levels.

If I can list three which I personally prefer, than it would be:

  1. Lake Louise Ski Resort www.skilouise.com

  2. Fernie Alpine Resort www.skifernie.com

  3. Revelstoke Mountain Resort www.revelstokemountainresort.com

Revelstoke is absolutely amazing and boasts North America's greatest vertical at 1,713 metres (5,620 ft)! If you are flying to Canada and not driving then I would say Calgary, Vancouver or Kelowna would be places to get to, rent a car and hit the resort.
