Driving the Pacific Coast Highway 10/17, where should we fly into and out?

Planning a trip to California to drive the Pacific Coast. We are flying in from Indiana to San Diego to rent a convertible preferably. What airport would be large enough to provide flights out and drop off our rental car around the northern coastline of california?

You could fly out of San Jose,San Francisco,or Oakland. San Francisco is a treat for tourists so I'd try to spend a day or two there.

I'd recommend Oakland International Airport.  It's a major airport, but easier to access and less congested than San Francisco.  However, depending on how far north you go you may need to turn south and backtrack to get to Oakland.  There are airports north of the San Francisco bay area (e.g. Santa Rosa Airport, Arcata-Eureka Airport (ACV), Redding Municipal Airport), but they're tiny and expensive to fly from.
