Best place to do a working holiday in Australia?

Planning on leaving for my working holiday in Australia around December / January.  Very interested in Cairns.  Is this a good place? Where would you suggest?

Cairns is a very lay back town. The people are lovely and it does have lots to do - like taking the cable car up to the Kuranda Heritage Markets and then taking the historic train ride back. The biggest disappointment though, is that there is no beach in Cairns. You need to travel out of Cairns to see one of Australia's legendary beaches. Having said that, Cairns is the stepping off point to visit may islands and the Great Barrier Reef. you can take a quick boat trip to Green Island and enjoy a beautiful snorkel with lots of big turtles. Port Douglas, which is approx 1hrs drive north of Cairns would probably be a place for you. It has a great village atmosphere and a beautiful beach.  I was in Cairns about 2 months ago and came across a stunning find halfway between Cairns and Port Douglas. It is a "resort" called the Thala Beach Nature Reserve and it is really worth either having lunch at (views from their restaurant are spectacular, food is amazing and it is reasonable!! ) or better still, staying in one of the bungalows that have stunning views It was an amazing find and I cannot wait to get back there.

Cairns is a good place to start base for your working holiday visa as there are plenty of fruit picking places around if that's what you're interested in. Head a bit further south of Cairns to the places of Tully (Australia) Townsville and Bowen for a better selection of farm work.

If you're wanting work in bars and as a rep then Cairns is the place to go as its jam pack full of backpackers.
